State Championships - Individuals go 51, 54, & 67 out of 190 runners

On Saturday October 29th, 190 of the best D1 runners in Wisconsin toed the line at the Ridges GC in Wisconsin Rapids for the 104th running of WIAA State Championships. The JMM Boys CC team was represented by three athletes in Luke V, Joel F, and Jonas B. The state meet compares the best of the best on a true cross country course with hills and trails, roots and mud, and a narrow margin for error. Luke, Jonas, & Joel got themselves in a great position for the first 1/2 mile of the race but a slow start at the front of the race left more runners together at the mile and our group slipped a little further back in the pack then we wanted to go through the mile. After the mile mark the JMM uniforms started to pick off some runners moving up an average about 15 places each. The hills on the state course are in the second half of the race and along with the tight turns and a large field it requires a lot of effort to continue to pass people. The final stretch run was a mixed bag for our guys as Luke held strong picking up a couple more spots to finish 51st, Joel had a really strong finish picking off 22 runners to finish in 54th place, and Jonas held on up the last finishing hill to place 67th. JMM put 3 individuals across the finish line under 16:55 on a difficult Ridges Course. Luke, Joel, & Jonas represented our team very well on this day. It was a nice way to see seniors Luke & Jonas careers to come to a close and a great first opportunity for junior Joel on this course. He looks forward to the chance to return to this course next season and hopes to bring his teammates with him in hopes of returning as a team next season. Nothing will be guaranteed for anyone to return to the state meet course and the only way that it can be earned is through endless miles, challenging workouts, mental toughness, and physical growth. NOW is the time to commit towards your goals to make this happen so in 2017 YOU can be a part of this great race.

Sectionals - 3rd Place - Luke, Joel, & Jonas Qualify as Individuals to State

What do you get when you put the #1, #5, & #13 ranked boys team in the same sectional? A triangular that is really exciting but still only allows two teams to advance to the state meet in Wisconsin Rapids. On Saturday we went to DeForest to pull off the impossible by trying to take down Madison West (#1 ranked team) and Middleton (preseason #1 and current #5 ranked team) in hopes to earn a team trip WIAA State. The JMM Spartans ran an amazing race that saw them put 4 runners under 16:36 and a 5th runner at 17:18. Most years and many sectionals this would be enough to make it to state. On Saturday for 2.5 miles it looked like we might have a chance but over the last 1/2 mile Middleton closed really strong and we slipped back a little bit. The gap of 31 points between 2nd and 3rd place teams does not represent how close things were throughout the race. Madison West scored 40 points and Middleton scored 43 points...no matter how you look at it, it would have been really hard for our team to top these scores. Our boys were led by Luke V who took 6th place and earned an opportunity to compete at state as an individual. Joel F ran a lifetime best 16:33 taking 11th and earning a trip to state. Jonas B ran 16:35 and held on for a spot at the state meet. Connor GT gave us 4 runners in the top 14 and 4 under 16:36 but he missed out on a individual spot to state by less than a second. This is a record number of qualifiers (3) for JMM to have compete at state and we came within a second of setting the record of D1 schools of having 4 individual competitors. Jack Z was our 5th runner at sectionals and turned in a 17:18 for 31st place. While Ty B ran a season best 17:37 for 42nd and Jared Gonzales was 17:41 for 45th. This group of boys represented JMM very well at the sectional and are for sure a top 10 team in the state if not better. They will be represented by Luke, Jonas, and Joel at Ridges on October 27th.

Big 8 Conference Championships - Varsity = 4th, JV1 = 5th, JV2 = 2nd

Boys Big 8 Cross Country is GOOD...which really is an understatement. Currently West (#1), LaFollette (#8), Craig (#12), Memorial (#13), Sun Prairie (poorly ranked at #14), and Middleton (even more poorly ranked at #15) are ranked by the WCCCA. Over the last five years the Big 8 has produced 2 state champion and 4 state runner up teams and had 4 of the 5 individual state champions. Last year the big 8 went 2nd (LaFollette), 4th (Middleton), 7th (Memorial), and 10th (Sun Prairie) at the D1 WIAA State Championships and had 4 of the 10 medalists on the award stand. When the Big 8 Conference gets together for their Conference Championships it is a good preview of the D1 state meet and this year did not disappoint with great performances on a difficult Verona HS course. Madison Memorial has gone through its growing pains this season but many positives came out of Saturdays meet and hopefully the younger runners in the program have gotten the bug to train in the off season t continue to improve the JMM CC product...because if we can be good in the Big 8, we will be good on the state level.

The varsity started off the meet where we put 4 runners in the top 19 but our gap to our fifth was just too much in such a strong conference (it would have been good enough to win A LOT of other conferences). We were led by Luke V who earned 1st team All-Conference (7th) with a great time of 16:08. Jonas B earned 2nd team All-Conference (14th). Casey GT (16th) and Joel F (19th) just missed out on All-Conference honors but both ran under 17:00. Middleton and West were the only teams to have a 3rd or 4th in before our team. Jared G did another great job being our 5th runner finishing in 35th to lead our team to a strong 4th place finish (beating ranked teams LaFollette & Craig). Ty B ran a season best time of 17:39 and Jack Z ran 18:03 to round out our varsity squad. We were very close to finishing 3rd place in a very tough conference and this was a success after all the injuries and illnesses we have endured this season. We get one more week to see if we can catch West or Middleton and earn a trip to state.

The JV1 this season has lacked a front runner and this will be where we need to improve next season to get our JV1 back to the strong team we are capable of having at JMM. Our team ran nice as a pack, it was just too far back to finish any higher than 5th place as a team. They were led by Dom G who finished in 17th place. He was closely followed by Stryder C (18:00), Malcolm B (18:03) and Elliot B (18:06) all who will return to lead our team next season. Sophomore Peter V was our 5th runner finishing 31st in 18:28. Will S finished his first year of cross country as our 6th runner and Chris X closed out a successful season with a gutty performance. I think this group learned a lot this season about racing and what type of training they will need to do over the next 9 months to have the kind of success they hope for next season. I look forward to the underclassmen in this group to lead us in the off-season and into next fall.

The JV2 race had all the lifetime PRs on the day with 15 lifetime bests run on the difficult course. This group has improved all season and the sky is the limit for them, depending on how much work they want to put in to their running. The group finished a very strong 2nd place by moving up throughout the entire race. They were led by Gavin H who ran a season best 18:09 for 5th place (with only one shoe on for 1/2 the race). Lance D had a great finish placing 13th in a PR of 18:37. Then our pack came in with Davis B, Peter S, Imaad S, and Ray G passing the Sun Prairie pack late in the race and finishing between 18:42 and 18:52. Senior Nic L rounded out our scoring seven for the JV2. The PRs and the strong races continued throughout the afternoon. This group has the potential and I look forward to seeing them put the work in over the coming months.

City Championships - Varsity = 3rd, JV = 3rd

Boys cross country in the city of Madison is at a very high level right now with West being ranked #1 in WIAA division 1, LaFollette at #8, Memorial at #13, and Edgewood at #12 in WIAA division 2. On the day all 5 teams put their varsity runners under 18:23 and there were 51 runners who broke 18:00 on the Lake Farm Park course. It was a fun meet to watch and a great start to the championship season as 40 JMM Spartans ran their season best and are prepared for a strong finish to this season.

The varsity race was competed with a few sick Memorial runners and one of our top runners sitting out the race. Luke V led for a large portion of the race and then coasted to a 2nd place finish with a season best time of 16:10. Casey GT earned All-City honors with his 9th place finish and 16:41 time. Joel F dipped under 17:00 minutes to finish 13th and Jared G earned a top 20 spot with his 17:24 clocking. Ty B and Jack Z 21st and 24th respectively and Elliot B broke 18:00 with his 31st place finish. The race was a step in the right direction for our varsity in what we need to accomplish in coming weeks. We look forward to seeing what this team really is made of in the coming meets and hope to turn some heads with a great finish to the year.

The JV race was dominated by a strong West program and a young LaFollette contingency of runners got ahead of our JV this season. Our depth has been challenged this season and it is going to take a lot of hard work in the off-season to get our program back to a team that won this meet just a year ago. Luckily we have a strong contingent of runners who are capable of making this jump and the process begins next week at the Big 8 meet by setting some high marks to return to next season. The JV was led by the return of Dominic G who finished 11th in 17:45. Malcolm B broke 18:00 with his 18th place finish and he was followed by Stryder C in 20th. Our scoring JV was rounded out by Peter V in 22nd and Chris X in 25th. The top 7 included Will S and Imaad S who was closely followed by Peter S and Gavin H. The JV group had many lifetime PRs run on this wet course and are set to attack the Verona course at Conference to end the season with one last hurrah.

Stoughton Invitational

Light rain & drizzle made the ground soft, wet, & muddy but that didn't stop the competition from being stiff at the Stoughton Invitational. The boys competition included the #4 ranked D1 school in Middleton, #5 in Monona Grove, #9 in Madison LaFollette, #12 in Sun Prairie, #13 in Stevens Point, and #16 in Madison Memorial. This is a lot of competition for a small 14 team meet run around the school grounds of a high school but it was fun to see that much competition packed into a tight race. Hopefully on the day our team learned a lot about ourselves as we end the regular season and head into the final meets of the championship season.

The boys varsity started off the day with a great race in which through 2 miles we were battling for a victory against some great teams. Today our team faded a little bit over the last 1/2 mile but we showed we are capable of competing with any of these teams as we finished in 4th place just 19 points out of 1st place. Our team was led by Luke V who ran a season best 16:23 to earn a 5th place finish and was joined by Jonas B in the top 10 who finished 8th in 16:39. Casey GT continues to improve each week placing 15th in 16:59 and Joel F had a good race just missing the medals in 26th place with a time of 17:29. Jared G rounded out our scoring group placing 41st in 17:55 and was followed closely by Ty B who was 45th in season best time of 18:01. Stryder C finished 76th in 18:53. Our varsity group learned a lot today about themselves and got a great look of where we compare to some of our Big 8 and Sectional foes. Now is the time to sharpen up the racing legs, get some rest, and be ready to compete at our best down the stretch run.

Our JV squad has been riddled by injuries and sickness this season which has led to opportunities for other runners to step up and contribute. We hope to get back some more runners in the coming weeks to help out the guys who ran really well today at Stoughton. They were led by Peter V who earned a medal with his 14th place finish. Malcom B and Gavin H were under 19:00 finishing 29th & 35th respectively. Will S, Matt B, Imaad S, Lance D, and Peter S just missed out on breaking 19:00 today but had a great pack that finished together as a group. Richard T ran a lifetime PR and continues to improve each week. The JV group only has two weeks remaining in the season. It is important they are taking care of their health, allowing their bodies to recover, getting LOTS of sleep, and preparing to be at their best for the City & Conference Championships the next two weekends.

Big 8 Split Meet - 2nd place

On Tuesday the Madison Memorial boys team headed back to Janesville for the Big 8 Split Meet where we took on teams from Craig, Sun Prairie, Beloit, & Parker. Some teams sat out some runners other teams ran their entire squad so it was hard to get a read on team scores but the individuals who ran got times and we could see some more improvement from individual runners. It is always hard to run two meets in four days and even harder to run it on the same course. Some kids excelled with the smaller fields and fewer fans and others missed the excitement of the Midwest Invitational. Regardless of improvement or not hopefully each boy was able to learn something about their racing and carry that forward into the last three weeks of the season. The boys team finished 2nd place behind Janesville Craig and had over a dozen season PRs and 5 lifetime bests. We head into the weekend at the Stoughton Invitational looking really strong and hope to compete well against some great teams.

Midwest Invitational - Varsity = 11th, Fr/So = 10th, & JV = 5th

The rain stopped long enough this weekend that the Midwest Invitational was able to host 42 of the best teams from WI, IL, IA, and TX in Janesville at the Blackhawk Golf Course. The ground was soft in a couple spots and there was still mud on the trail in the woods but overall the course was amazing leading to some good times on beautiful fall weekend. Many Madison Memorial boys took advantage of great competition to run some season best times and set ourselves up for a great last month to the season.

The morning started with our Frosh/Soph kids toeing the line to compete against other athletes their age. Our group ran really strong and shows promise for the future. The team was led by Gavin H who ran a PR of 18:10 to finish 29th. Next came soph Peter V who finished in 38th and then 2 more PRs by Peter S (18:43) and Martin V (18:45) both dipping under the 19:00 for the first time. Freshman Brett N rounded out the scoring with his 90th place and fellow freshman Joey C broke 20:00 for the first time with his PR for 19:58. I was excited to see this group of guys compete really well and earn a 10th place finish out of 27 complete teams. With hard work and improvement in the coming years these guys have a group future ahead of them in cross country.

The theme of the day in the boys varsity race was that every team seemed to be missing some key components and Madison Memorial was no different. We toed the line with less than our best but the guys who toed the line gave their best and that is all we could ask for today. Our best on the day was finishing 11th out of 40 teams and some really good teams at that. Our team was led by Jonas B who ran a PR of 16:04 and finished in 12th place. Senior Luke V gave us another finish in the medals with his 28th place finish and Casey GT ran 16:37 to place 35th. Our top 3 runners this year were better than our top 3 runners here last year. Jared G (17:22) and Stryder C (17:41) both stepped up to run PRs and fill out our scoring 5 by placing 97th and 124th. Our group is starting to get closer together and the closer we can put 5 runners to our #1 runner the better we will be as a varsity team. Elliot B broke 18:00 for the first time and Chris X got to run in his first ever varsity race (not bad for a guy who ran 28:08 at this same meet as a freshman....maybe hard work and consistency in training can pay off).

After moving some runners up to run varsity and others who had already competed in the frosh/soph race we were not sure who our scoring 5 would be in JV and where we could finish as a team. Again, we had a group of boys willing to rise to the challenge in lead our team to a 5th place finish. This is the first time this year that our depth really started to show and I'm excited for what this could mean as we enter the stretch run of our season. Malcolm B ran a nice PR of 18:03 to earn a medal with his 13th place finish. Senior Ty B place 31st to be our 2nd runner. Lance D closed the last mile really strong to finish in 55th with a time of 18:44 and he pulled along Eli T (18:48) and Matt B (18:48) to give us 5 runners in the top 61 finishers. As we add all of our guys back in at the next meet I hope to see this gap shrink back down to less than 20 seconds. A tight pack of runners who are willing to work together and push each other in practices and meets is what leads to success in JV races. The team had 32 PRs on the day and many came from this JV group who is really starting to learn how to race. I encourage this group to keep it up for the final weeks of the season and reap the rewards of their hard work.

Smiley Invitational - Varsity = 3rd, JV = 3rd

What is cross country? I get that question often...I think the easiest way to answer that question is show up at the American Legion Golf Course on September 17th and watch the Smiley Invitational. From an athlete standpoint...you wake up before the sun rises, ride on a bus for countless hours, overtake a golf course for running purposes, challenge your body on a "true" cross country course, compare yourself to runners from every part of the state, and then spend 3 hours celebrating all of this with your teammates watching movies & eating out for lunch. From a spectator & coach standpoint...you get to spend a beautiful fall morning outside enjoying the leaves changing and seeing thousands of people who are excited about cheering on runners. This meet has always been my one of my favorite meets from the time I competed here as an athlete to when Coach Paul and I decided to bring Madison Memorial to this meet in 2008. It turns the page to the second half of the season that will go by quickly and allows us to learn a lot about ourselves individually and as a team.

The meet started off with the varsity race where we were the defending champions taking on the #6 ranked SPASH team and the #8 Sun Prairie Cardinals. Our team was led by great races from Jonas B and Luke V who planted themselves in the top 5 early and went on to finish #2 and #4 overall in the meet. Jonas was the top large school d1 finisher and will forever be in the program of the Smiley Invitational (a meet in its 60th year). Having two low numbers like this will make our team a very formidable team throughout the season but we will need to move our #3, 4, & 5 runners closer to be a top ranked state team. Our gap of 1:06 between our #2 and 3 runners is too large (this should be our gap between #1 and 5 runners) and another :40 back to our #5 runner is why we're not able to beat Sun Prairie or SPASH. That being said the work that Jack Z, Joel F, and Jared G did to put 5 runners in under 18:05 was good enough to place our team 3rd out of 24 D1 schools. We know we can do better and that is what makes the 3rd place difficult to handle but hopefully that will get this group focused on improving the remainder of the season. Stryder and Elliot earned some valuable varsity racing experience and each race they have to learn from in varsity will make them a better competitor moving forward. I look forward to this group continuing to improve each race and seeing if we can improve upon our rank of 13th best boys team in the state.

The JV race shows off a team's depth and our depth has been hurt this year due to injury and illness. As we move forward it will be important that we continue to have new boys willing to step up and improve for us at each meet. It will be nice IF we get back some of our missing runners but in the meantime it will be important to get the most out of everybody who is racing. Chris X took great advantage of this Saturday leading the JV group with his 9th place finish. He was followed by Gavin H, Malcolm B, Davis B, & Will S putting 5 runners in the top 30. To compete with SPASH & Sun Prairie (which we will see again this season) we need to move this group forward about 15 seconds and close the gap from :36 down to less than :20....both things that we are very capable of doing. The JV group saw 15 lifetime PRs on a difficult Smiley course and shows that our hard work in practice is paying off. It will be important in the coming days that we stay healthy, take care of our bodies, and get SLEEP. As school and workouts will get very busy this week followed by homecoming and 2 meets next week. The end is near for our JV group and making through the coming days will be vital.

Big 8 Grade Level Challenge - 7th place

The rain returned to Lake Farm Park Tuesday prior to the Big 8 Grade Level Challenge and the course was wetter and muddier than it was on Saturday. We held out some of our top athletes due to injury and course conditions and we tested the depth of our team. The results are that we need to build the depth of our team to be able to reach our team goals. Hopefully this meet was a wake up call for our team as we enter the last month of the season. It is going to be important that we get healthy and stay healthy to compete at our best. Also, we need to take advantage of everyday to improve our fitness and learn how to race at our best. The potential is in this group of athletes but we will need better focus and execution the remainder of the season to reach our team goals.

The frosh/soph race led of the night and our group was led by Peter V who finished 14th in 18:49 and was 11th amongst sophomores. Our top freshman was Brett N who ran 19:26 to be the 13th best freshman in the meet. This group of runners saw 12 PRs set on the day and continue to improve with each meet. During the junior/senior race JMM's top finisher was Stryder C was 18th in the race in 17:56 and the 8th best junior finisher. He was closely followed by Jared G in 19th with a time of 18:00 and the 11th best senior on the day. We added 13 more PRs in the second race of the day. It was a difficult day to PR on a wet & muddy course but our guys were determined to run their best. This attitude is what will be needed in the remaining practices and meets to get our times faster.

Madison West Invitational - Varsity = 3rd, JV = 2nd

Saturday morning the JMM Spartans headed out to Lake Farm Park to compete in the Madison West Invitational. As the bus left the parking lot a steady drizzle turned to a light rain and the we all new that we would be running on a slick wet course. The team was prepared and although there weren't many large puddles there was plenty of mud and tough turns. Some guys slipped, others fell, and a few even got stung by wasps but overall our guys went out & competed and took a huge step forward from our Verona meet. The team is still not where we want to be as a team but we are continuing to improve and have another month to reach our season goals. The next month will be very important in how our season finishes. It will be important that we support each other, take good care of our bodies, go to class and do well in the classroom. This West Invite was a step in the right direction for our team and hopefully we learned from the experiences to come back here Tuesday night and keep improving.

The varsity race saw competition between state ranked Madison West & Monona Grove and our very own Spartans. Jonas and Luke did a great job of positioning themselves in the top group and competing very well on a slick course. Both guys were able to pull single digit cards for our team which will be a huge advantage for us moving into bigger meets later in the season. Our gap of 40 seconds between our #2 and #3 runners was too large and is where we lost to West and MG (by only 1 point). Our team will continue to improve as this group moves closer to the front. Today they were led by Casey GT who was followed closely by Jack Z and Joel F. The top 5 runners earned top 25 finishes on the day earning individual medals. Our gap of 1:03 from #1 to #5 is not bad but will need to improve to beat the likes of Madison West (who beat us by 23 points). The varsity was rounded out today by Elliot B and Ty B. I look forward to this group continuing to improve throughout the season.

The JV race ran after the rain got heavier and the course had already seen two other races. The boys handled the conditions well but according to the race director...the whole field took a wrong turn on the course causing the runners to run about 70 meters short of 5000 meters. Luckily we will be back here on Tuesday and guys who set PRs on Saturday can go out and set even better times on Tuesday. We got an up close look at what a really strong JV looks like on Saturday as West took the top 5 spots in the race to score a perfect 15 points. Our guys put in a great effort to break this group up but it wasn't meant to be this day. Our team finished a very strong 2nd today and hopefully we now have the motivation to go out and close the gap on West. We have been in this situation before and know what it will take to catch them by the end of the season. Our JV was led by Jared G and Stryder C who earned top 10 finishes. They were joined at the awards ceremony by Gavin H, Peter V, Chris X, and Davis B who also earned top 20 finishes. Our gap of :32 seconds from 1 - 5 is nice but we need to be able to move this whole group forward. This can happen over the next couple weeks and I look forward to see which of these athletes will also compete to make our varsity better. Some great improvement was seen in the JV group from Verona to this meet (although they weren't official PRs) and it is clear that the hard work is already starting to payoff. It will be important to keep up this hard week in the middle part of our season and KEEP OURSELVES HEALTHY.

Verona Invitational - Varsity = 13th, JV = 9th

Bad choices, missed practices, and injuries left only 40 of our 78 athletes competing at the Verona Invitational. If our team is going to reach its potential for this season, we must first look at our individual commitments towards cross country. The hope is that our team can get this turned around and quickly. For those athletes who did compete on Saturday they were greeted by sunny skies and warm temperatures. The competition in the Big 8 showed it will be stiff again this season. It is now time for our team to start to chip away at this competition with hard work and dedication.

Our varsity team was led by Joel F who earned an individual medal with his 36th place finish. The varsity scorers included senior Ty B, junior Elliot B, sophomore Gavin H, and sophomore Peter V. This group combined for a team score of 369 points to finish in 13th place (out of 25 teams). We beat Platteville on the 6th place tiebreaker as junior Malcolm B beath their #6 runner and junior Will S rounded out the varsity finishers competing in his first ever high school cross country race. This group stepped in nicely to compete hard for our team today and we hope they earned valuable experience that will help them this season and into their running career.

The JV team scored 255 points to finish in 9th place. They were led by freshman Brett N, junior Eli T, sophomore Peter S, senior Jansen H, and sophomore Martin V. Brett, Peter, and Martin led a group of 20 runners who ran their Personal Record (PR) on this difficult Verona course. Others who improved their PR from last season included Richard T, Joey R, and Walker V. I look forward to see the progression of runners who continue to work hard at practice. It is important that everyone is getting more sleep to allow their bodies to recover, stretching to improve their flexibility, eating healthy & hydrating to take care of their bodies, and putting the time to ice, rehab, etc to keep the improvement going.

Intrasquad

For the second year in a row the rains soaked Elver Park overnight before Intrasquad and this year the ground was just too soaked to absorb the new rain leaving shin deep puddles and mud slick trails. Instead of competing on the normal intrasquad course, changes were made, and the athletes adapted. The day was wet but we got to run a 3 mile race and see where we stand for the beginning of the year. It might not have been a true cross country course but hopefully we learn about warming up, racing, scoring a meet, and adapting to the circumstances.

The race was dominated by seniors up front but many new faces popped up on the radar as potential helpers throughout the season. Jonas B & Luke V looked really strong as 1 & 2 and they were followed by junior Joel F and senior Jack Z. The gap of 1:28 from our # 1 to our #5 runner is too large and we will have to work to get that under 1:00 (or better yet, :45) as the season goes along. The top 7 was rounded out by Dom G, Ty B, and Jared G. Our JV1 will be fun to watch this season and hopefully will provide some competition for our varsity team. They were separated by :47 at this race and we would like to see that group get even closer together too (less than :30). Our depth is not as strong as in past years but this group of runners is working hard and if we keep it up that will pay off throughout the season. The top sophomore on the day was Peter V in 10th and the top freshman was Brett N in 17th. The young runners are looking really good.

Things are getting busy with the season in full swing and school starting this week. Hopefully all the athletes are working on getting into a good routine of getting 8 - 9 hours of sleep, hydrating every day, and eating healthy to refuel. Intrasquad is the first step in hopefully a fun and exciting season.
