Another GREAT Season - THANKS

THANK YOU for another great season. The 2015 season saw many positives as the boys worked hard all season long to reach their individual and team goals. The JV team won the Big 8 Championship and the varsity squad earned the school's 16th trip to the WIAA State Championship. Our team accomplished these goals due to many miles run, difficult workouts completed like the ladder & Rosa Hills, and dedication towards each other and our goals. The bar has been set high for our team for next season. Our varsity returns an experienced core group with a hungry group of JV runners hoping to make formidable challenges to make our varsity even better next season. As a team we surpassed our academic goal for the fall and hope to see every athlete continue to grow as a student and positive influence on the Madison community. Reaching these goals are not easy task and none will happen overnight or by one individual. As we look forward to the future we want to give a THANK YOU to our graduating seniors. This group of seniors have been a big part of developing our program over the last four years and leave the team in the good hands of the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. We challenge the next group of JMM distance runners to make a plan and set a goal now next season. Through hard work and dedication the next season can be even better.

For the sixth season in a row our team has exceeded our team goal for GPA (3.4 or higher). KEEP WORKING HARD IN THE CLASSROOM!!! Our team has SEVEN student athletes with a 4.0 GPA, who were joined by six other teammates for a perfect 4.0 GPA during the 1st quarter. 79% of our athletes met our individual goal of exceeding 3.0 for their cumulative GPA. Those athletes needing help in the classroom should ask a teammate, talk to their teachers, and get a tutor. There are many options available at Memorial if you take advantage of them. Keep up the great tradition of Memorial Distance Runners in the classroom.

State Championships - 7th Best D1 Team in the State!!!!

The culmination of the 2015 Boys CC Season took place on Saturday at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids. The race included 20 of the best division one teams and 50 of the best division one athletes. This season the Madison Memorial boys team participated in the State Meet for the 16th time in school history. The season began in August but the work for this one day started for most of these athletes in June. Many of these kids have been working towards this event since their freshman year and multiple years of hard work, long mileage, fast workouts, countless strength exercises, endless hours of stretching/icing, and many sacrifices were rewarded with seventeen minutes of racing on one of the hardest courses in the state of Wisconsin in muddy and wet conditions. To many people outside of the sport of cross country (and some even in the sport) it doesn't make sense to work that hard and be that wet but the smiles on the faces of the kids cheering along the course and the boys who finished the race explain that it is all worth the effort. Our team, like every team, had its fair share of ups and downs this season with illness and injuries but throughout it all we kept our team goals in sight and this is what led to our good end of the season. The JMM CC boys team was not satisfied with just making it to state but instead wanted to make sure they had one more good race to end their 2015 campaign. Our team did exactly what we did all season long, run like a TEAM, and this led to a strong 7th place finish. As we turn the page on the season the questions become can we seek out the hard work and dedication that can earn us a spot back at this meet again next season, who will step in to replace our seniors, and can we improve upon this 7th place finish?

The Madison Memorial boys team was comprised of 67 athletes this season and on Saturday that team was well represented by the boys who toed the line at the WIAA State Championships. Luke V (56th overall - 17:01), Rory S (58th - 17:02), Casey GT (62nd - 17:05), Jonas B (69th - 17:08), Jack Z (86th - 17:14), Trevor R (119th - 17:33), and Zach H (148th - 17:47) put forth a great effort on a difficult course in even more difficult conditions. Our work throughout the season and the meets on the tough course in difficult conditions helped this team improve on their 10th place ranking to finish with 213 points in 7th place. Kimberly (80 points) and Madison LaFollette (99 points) earned state trophies on the day and the Big 8 was represented amazingly by LaFollete (2nd), Middleton (4th), Madison Memorial (7th), and Sun Prairie (10th). Our team plan all season long was to keep an eye on your teammates and move together as a group. This is difficult to accomplish at the state meet with 190 of the best athletes jammed into a small window but our guys did it better than ever on Saturday. Our team split of 13 seconds between 1 - 5 is what earned us the 7th place finish. Jonas did an amazing job of getting the team out to a strong start through the mile. His teammates followed the lead and we saw great kicks from the likes of Luke, Rory, & Casey as they fought for every point in the finish. Jack had a great race as he moved through the pack to be our 5th runner, he passed 42 people between the mile mark and the finish. Trevor R ended up being the 3rd best #6 runner in the state while Zach H was also the 3rd best #7 runner...Trevor bumped up the score of every team behind us (13 teams) and Zach would have been in the top 5 of 7 teams today. To take that next step as a team we need to move this group forward. It is just small amounts that accomplish it, notice the 13 seconds that separated Luke & Jack was 30 places. I look forward to seeing what the returning juniors in this group can do and wonder which athletes will step up to be the next runner to represent JMM at the State Championships.

This season our JV team reached its goal of winning the Big Eight Championship and our Varsity reached the goal of earning a trip to the State Meet. We have one last team goal left and that takes place in the classroom. Let's make sure we finish the 1st quarter strong and keep up the hard work in the classroom all school year long. We hope to have every athlete with a 3.0 or better GPA and a team GPA over 3.4.

THANK YOU to the fans who braved the weather to be a part of this special day...lots of proud Spartans out there today!

Sectionals - 2nd place - Headed to STATE!

2015 Sectional Runner Ups - State Qualifiers

Madison Memorial headed to Ripp Park in Waunakee Saturday morning for the Division 1 sectional where the top 2 teams and 5 individuals earn the right to advance to the WIAA State Championship. The weather was overcast and rainy and the course was hilly and difficult but all the teams had to face the same adversity and the Spartans were ready to compete. The work for this day was put in over the last five months and the boys just had to trust their training and each other. Our team ran as a group again today putting 5 runners within 28 seconds of each other and all 7 runners within 37 seconds. Middleton finished a strong first place scoring 42 points and Madison Memorial earned the runner up finish scoring 74 points outdistancing Madison West by 11 points. Our team was the only squad to have all 7 runners under 18:00 as we place all our runners in the top 28. This great team performance earned the Spartans a trip to the WIAA State Meet next weekend in Wisconsin Rapids. This will be the boys 16th appearance at the WIAA State Championships, the first since 2009, and this marks only the 3rd time in school history that both the boys & girls team will compete at the state meet (1979, 1985, & 2015).

The large hills in the first 1/2 mile led to a conservative start to our race but by the mile our group found their positions and were running well in the front part of the race. The long climb to the two mile mark is where the race was decided and it was obvious the hard work our team had done throughout the year paid off as all runners looked gassed going into the last mile but our guys were in great position to earn a state berth and closed well to wrap up that trip to Wisconsin Rapids. The sectional meet has one purpose...to decide who goes to state. Times aren't important, places and team scores are the story of the day. JMM was led to the finish line by Rory S (8th - 17:18) who earned a top 10 finish with his strong closing kick. He was quickly joined in the chute by Luke V (12th - 17:24), Casey GT (14th - 17:28), and Jonas B (17th - 17:30) who all earned top 20 finishes. Zach H (23rd - 17:47) led our strong finish of our 5th - 7th runners who helped us put distance on the other teams today. Trevor R (27th - 17:53) and Jack Z (28th - 17:56) would have been in every team's top 5 or better today except for Middleton. This group ran solid today and are ready to have a really good race at the state meet.

THANK YOU to all the parents, families, runners, alumni, teachers, administrators, community members and more who cheered on the JMM teams at Ripp Park....it was an AMAZING show of support for the teams and helped both the boys & girls teams on a difficult course with dreary weather. I hope we can have just as many fans or more who make it to the Ridges in Wisconsin Rapids to cheer on these runners who represent our whole program.

Big 8 Conference Meet - Varsity = 4th, JV1 = Champions, JV2 = 3rd

The first fall frost greeted the Big 8 Conference as they converged on Blackhawk Golf Course in Janesville to compete in the 2015 Conference Championships. The brisk temperatures led to a hard running surface but combined with blue skies and sunshine made for great running temperatures. The course was in good conditions, the competition was amazing, and the Madison Memorial Spartans performed at a high rate Saturday leading to 39 lifetime PRs and 14 additional season bests. The meet for many of the runners was a culmination of a great nine week experience in cross country it was great to see many memories shared during the days events. The team finished a strong 4th place in varsity, brought home the CHAMPIONSHIP in JV1, and finished 3rd in the JV2 race. The athletes performed great in each race and should be proud of their accomplishments.

The meet started with the varsity competition which featured LaFollette (#1 ranked in state), Middleton (#6), Sun Prairie (#7), Memorial (#10), & West (#12) and two very strong teams in Verona & Janesville Craig. LaFollete (missing 1 runner) & Middleton locked in a close 1 point battle and showed that they both with be state title contenders this season with their combination of strong front runners and solid depth. Our team locked in a battle with Sun Prairie in a show of teams that both have great depth. After losing to Sun Prairie two week ago by 26 points at the Stoughton Invitational today our team gave them a much better battle that came down to the final straightaway with our team narrowly finishing fourth to Sun Prairie by 2 points. Our strong performance put more than 50 points between ourselves Verona, West, & Craig. The team was led today by All-Conference performers Luke V (8th-16:04 PR) and Jonas B (12th-16:21 PR). Rory S (16:30) and Casey GT (16:36 PR) ran together throughout the race finishing in 18th and 22nd respectively. Jack Z (29th-16:45 PR) and Zach H (30th - 16:48 PR) moved up through the race both earning top 30 finishes. Austin W rounded out the top 7 by being the 2nd best #7 runner in the race with his 36th place finish of 17:17. The strength of our team all season has been keeping a close gap between our runners and that continued today with all 7 runners being within 1:13 of each other and our 1 - 5 gap being only 41 seconds.

The JV1 race had a Madison Memorial effect on it right from the beginning as this group was determined to win back the Big 8 Championship our team had won in 2013. Trevor R was determined to earn back his varsity spot which he did by winning the JV1 individual title with a winning time of 16:52. Madison Memorial was the ONLY team on the day who had 7 runners finish under 17:00 minutes! The remainder of our JV1 group firmly planted themselves in the lead pack and ran hard as a group throughout the race. Their strong team mentality led to 7 runners finishing in the top 18 and a great team score of 34 points to outdistance Middleton & West. This means that although our JV group did not go undefeated this season they were able to beat every team they faced in the state this year. Trevor was supported with top 10 finishes by Dominic G (5th - 17:16 PR), Benton DD (7th - 17:27 PR), and Jared G (10th - 17:29 PR). Senior Sam Z (11th - 17:33 PR) rounded out the scoring five and he was closely followed by Joel F (14th - 17:40) and Ty B (18th - 17:44). This group represented well our team depth and the hard work our JV has put in all season to support our varsity runners and continue to challenge them to do their best.

The final race of the day was the JV2 race which really highlights the team depth of a cross country program. JMM won this race in 2013 but lacked the same depth this season as we had then but had a nice combination of senior leadership and upcoming youth that performed well in this race. In 2013 we had a lot of frosh/soph runners who ran well and now in 2015 our leading our varsity & JV1...hopefully some of today's young runners in JV2 will put in the work to be our top guys next year and in the future. The JV2 finished a strong 3rd place behind perennial strong JV2 program West and a deep Middleton squad. The group was led by senior Calvin J who earned a top 5 finish with his sub 18:00 performance of 17:59. This gave Memorial 15 runners under 18 minutes on the day (tieing West for the most in the Big 8). Also scoring for our JV2 was sophomores Elliot B (13th - 18:11 PR), Stryder C (18th - 18:15 PR), & Eli T (25th - 18:19) and freshman Peter V (15th - 18:13). Rounding out the top 7 were Ben T (26th - 18:23) and Ray G (28th - 18:25 PR). This group saw lifetime PRs by: Chris X (1:41), Jack T (1:10), Ameya K (1:00), Kevin T (:47), Richard T (:42), Kyle W (:39), Yazi Y (:39), Grant J (:34), Finn J (:26), Joey DR (:26), Zane R (:25), Walker V (:24), Nathan S (:23), Nic L (:19), Henry C (:19), Pete B (:19), Peter S (:15), James B (:13), Nathan W (:12), Andy T (:10), Matt B (:09), Martin V (:06), and Eli H (:01).

Saturday was a great finish to the season for our JV athletes. Everyone should come out to Waunakee next weekend to cheer on the varsity team as they attempt to earn the right to compete at the WIAA State Meet. I encourage everyone to finish the quarter strong and take care of their classwork throughout the whole season. All athletes should continue to build upon the successes we had this season and build to a better future in running, the classroom, and in life.

City Championships - Varsity = Runner Up, JV = Champions

The 2015 Championship Season began Friday night as Madison Memorial traveled back to Lake Farm Park for the last time this season to compete in the Madison City Championship Meet. A five team meet wouldn't be something that usually draws much attention but when you have the defending D1 State Champions (West - also currently ranked #12 in D1) and the current #1 ranked team in the state of Wisconsin (LaFollette) in the same city competing against the current #10 ranked D1 team (Memorial) and the #9 ranked D2 team (Edgewood) you get yourself a very competitive small championship meet. Madison cross country has a storied history of distance running that continues to be written still each year and Friday night we had an opportunity to compare ourselves to some of the best teams in the state and prove ourselves at the same time. The City Championships is just one step closer to meeting our season goals.

The varsity competition started off the meet and LaFollette showed why they are the #1 ranked team in the state today. We were in a battle with West for 2nd place and ran a great race to take 2nd scoring 47 points to West's 67 points. Our team was led by Luke V who broke up LaFollette's perfect score by finishing 5th in 16:31. He was closely followed by Jonas B who ran a PR of 16:34 for 7th earning All-City honors. Just missing out on All-City was Rory S (11th - 16:48) and Casey GT (13th - 16:49) who ran solid races as our 3rd & 4th runners. Jack Z ran a PR of 17:04 to be our # 5 in 16th place. Our gap of :33 seconds between #1 - 5 was very solid but what was even more impressive was our finish of our #6 and #7 runners who also came in during the next :16 seconds. Austin W was right behind Jack finishing 17th in 17:07 and Trevor R finished 21st in 17:20. Our varsity competed well all-around from our first to our seventh runner and we will need to continue to do this in the coming weeks to place our best at each championship race.

In two tries this season our JV took 2nd each time against West's JV team. Tonight our team scored an impressive 30 points and edged West by 2 points to earn the JV City Championship. The JV crew was led by JV City Champion Zach H who ran a PR of 17:15 for the victory. Teammate Dominic G ran a PR of 17:30 to place runner-up in the race. Sam Z (17:40 - 5th) and Jared G (17:50 - 9th) both ran PRs to earn top 10 finishes and Benton DD wrapped up our scoring with his 18:03 for 13th place. Joel F (18:06 - 16th) and Ty B (18:09 - 19th) rounded out the scoring seven runners in JV. Their were 46 season bests run on the day and they included the following lifetime PRs: Clayton K (1:08), Richard T (1:00), Peter S (:57), Garrett K (:51), Joey DR (:49), James B (:43), Liam H (:35), Kevin T (:34), Sam M (:29), Finn J (:28), Nathan S (:25), Stryder C (:24), Grant J (:17), Adrian A (:16), Kyle W (:16), Ameya K (:14), Nathan W (:13), Pete B (:12), Henry C (:08), Zane R (:06), and Elliot B (:04). As this group prepares for the Conference Championships they are peaking at the right time. Take care of yourself in the coming days, get some good rest, and be ready to end the season on a high note in Janesville on Saturday.

Stoughton Invitational - Varsity = 5th, JV = 2nd

Madison Memorial descended upon Stoughton High School Saturday morning arriving to cool fall temperatures, a brisk wind, and sunny skies. The meet guaranteed to be competitive as 7 of the top 20 teams in the state were attending the 14 team meet (LaFollette #1, JMM #5, SPASH #6, Sun Prairie #7, Middleton #9, Verona #15, & Baraboo #20). Coming off of a race Tuesday and contending with homecoming week festivities the boys look to put their best foot forward as we took this last stepping stone before starting the championship season. Good times were run by both groups leading to a 2nd place finish in junior varsity and a 5th place finish in varsity. The JV was able to take down SPASH who beat us at Smiley but lost to Middleton in a close race. Luckily we see Middleton one more time at Conference & two weeks and we will have a good chance to best the in that meet. The varsity finished 5th out of the 7 ranked teams but all 5 teams could be top 8 teams at the state meet. It will be important for this group to continue what they are doing over the next three weeks to insure the opportunity to prove this at the state meet. As a team it is important we get our rest and get back to full strength in the coming days. The last weeks of the season will be competitive but exciting and all of our team goals are still attainable.

The racing began with the JV race that pitted Middleton (beat us at Verona) and Stevens Point (beat us at Smiley) against our JV squad. Our group got stuck a little back at the tight start but moved up well throughout the race. They were led by Austin W (17:44 - 4th) and Dom G (17:47 - 5th) who earned top 5 finishes. Our next three all finished in the top 20 as Jared G (17:57) finished 10th, Benton DD (18:00) finished 11th, and Sam Z (18:13) finished 20th. Unfortunately Middleton had all their scorers in the top 15 but are well within reach over the coming weeks. Seniors Ben T (30th - 18:32) and Calvin J (38th - 18:44) rounded out the top 7 on JV today. This group had 23 season best performances including lifetime PRs by Zane R (1:08), Walker V (1:01), Pete B (:37), Imaad S (:32), Finn J (:22), Garrett K (:18), Joey DR (:14), Matt B (:13), Adrian A (:10), James B (:08), and Stryder C (:01). This group has two races remaining against good competition at potentially fast courses...looking forward to even more and bigger PRs in the coming weeks.

In the varsity race our squad got out to a good position in the early part of the race but just lacked the extra energy on this day to move up throughout the race. Our team had 5 runners under 17:20 and that should not take 5th place at a normal 14 team meet but the competition on Saturday was not a normal 14 team meet. There were just not enough teams in this field for our team to benefit from our strong 4 - 5 runners and therefor led to our 5th place finish. Our top 5 had another strong finish with a spread of only 36 seconds. They were led today by Luke V (16:43 - 14th),  Rory S (16:55 - 20th), and Jonas B (16:57 - 22nd) who all earned medals with their top 25 finishes and sub 17:00 performances. This group was followed closely by Casey GT (17:09 - 27th) and Trevor R (17:19 - 35th). Jack Z had another nice race being the 2nd best #6 runner in the race finishing 40th in 17:26 and Zach H joined him in the top 50 with his 49th place 17:47 performance.

Take care of business in the classrooms (check out those progress reports), get some rest after homecoming week, and mentally prepare for the upcoming championship run. The hard work over the summer and last couple months is ready to be used to end with some spectacular times and finishes for this season.

Big 8 Grade Level Challenge - 4th Place

Madison Memorial headed back to Lake Farm Park Tuesday night to take on the Big 8 Conference in the Grade Level Challenge. This meet pits runners against other athletes their grade and score the 7 lowest runners on each team in their individual grade level races. Winning this meet takes talent across all grade levels and individuals who can score in the top 10 or higher against their peers. The fall weather set in Tuesday night to provide a great cross country atmosphere. Unfortunately the overnight rainfall had not yet drained from the course leaving puddles, soft corners, and some muddy situations. The Spartans plunges through the puddles and put together a very solid performance in the cool weather. Their score of 47 points was good enough for a 4th place finish missing out on 3rd place by just a point. The scorers for the team were Luke V 16:58 - 3rd in Jr race, Rory S 17:15 - 5th in Sr race , Jack Z 17:18 - 6th in Jr race, Trevor R 17:25 - 7th in Sr race, Peter V 18:55 - 7th in Fr race, Jonas B 17:34 - 8th in Jr race, and Dominic G - 17:52 - 11th in Jr race. Even though conditions were not ideal we had 20 athletes set season bests and 7 lifetime bests. PRs were set by Richard T (:26), Yazi Y (:24), Finn J (:18), Liam H (:14), Peter S (:08), Martin V (:02), and Adrian A (:01).

Busy time of year...stay on top of homework, get sleep, take care of your body. It is an important time to be on top of our game as we focus in on the last invite of the season and then the championship season. Make good decisions and be ready to take care of business at school, practice, and meets.

Midwest Invitational - Fr/So - 8th, Varsity - 3rd, JV - 1st

Midwest Invitational - 3rd Place Varsity

On Saturday 41 boys teams, containing over 1,000 runners, from 4 different states descended on Janesville for the Midwest Invitational. The meet included the top ranked D1 (Madison LaFollette), D2 (Wisconsin Lutheran), & D3 (Darlington) teams from the state of Wisconsin and a plethora of teams ranked in their respective divisions by the coaches association. This meet is by far the biggest meet that we compete in all season and one of the more competitive meets too. The boys were prepared to compete well after a great week of practice. The frosh/soph team led the meet off with their 8th place finish. Followed by the varsity taking 3rd place behind the #1 (LaFollette) and #2 (Kimberly) ranked teams in the D1 Wisconsin, and the JV team ended on a high note by earning 1st place. It was a successful meet that marks the 1/2 way point of our competition season and prepares us for an exciting finish over the next month.

The day started with our boys freshman and sophomores representing us against some of the top young talent in the state. This group continues to work hard at practice and will be the future of our team soon. They were led today by the efforts of Peter V (PR 18:13 - 20th) and Joel F (18:31 - 32nd). Throughout the race our pack tried to pull closer and closer to these runners it was fun to see this group working to run together. The scorers were rounded out by Eli T (18:40 - 38th), Elliot B (PR 18:46 - 42nd), and Malcolm B (19:05 - 48th). Also enjoying PRs on the day following closely behind were Stryder C (19:05 - 49th) and Eli H (19:13 - 54th). If this group of boys is able to lead our younger runners through some good off-seasons of training and stay healthy there is a lot of upside to what they can do and they might be the group leading us in varsity in a year or two.

There are two different ways to try to have a good cross country team to win a race - 1) excellent top end runners with a couple good 4 - 5 runners or 2)great group of 5 runners. At the Midwest Invitational it was a battle between many teams that were both using this model of running and our team fits into the second category. Our team's #1 runner was the 13th (out of 41), the #2 runner was the 5th best, #3 was 4th best, #4 was 3rd best, #5 was 3rd best, #6 was the best, and #7 was the best in the race. The points we gave up at the front end of the race we were able to make up by our strong depth. Unfortunately strong teams like LaFollette and Kimberly had enough at 4th & 5th runners to be still better than our squad. How do we improve in the coming weeks? Keep our pack close together (less than 30 seconds) and move the whole pack forward 10 - 15 seconds. At today's Midwest invite had we done just that we would have beaten Kimberly by 10 points. We learn from today's meet and move forward to another strong meet at Grade Level & Stoughton. Our varsity group had 4 runners under 17:00 in Luke V (16:28 - 20th), Rory S (PR 16:29 - 21st), Casey GT (PR 16:39 - 24th), and Jonas B (PR 16:41 - 28th). Our depth shined with the performances of Trevor R (PR 17:07 - 49th), Jack Z (PR 17:07 - 51st), and Austin W (17:34 - 83rd). This group continues to lead us in workouts and at meets and look forward to a strong last month to their season.

Our JV team ran a complete race to win a very competitive Midwest Invite. They took down both Wisconsin Lutheran (who went out aggressively and tried to take control of the race) and Arrowhead (who went out conservatively and tried to finish strong to win the race) who are both very deep and strong programs. The JV group was focused and worked together well to score 35 points and put 6 runners in the top 20. The were led by Zach H (17:27 - 2nd) who led much of the race and Dom G (17:35 - 3rd) who closed hard to give our team a strong top 2 runners. They were closely followed by Sam Z (PR 17:54 - 7th) and Jared G (PR 17:56 - 8th) to give us 11 runners unders 18:00 on the day. Ty B (18:20 - 15th) rounded out our scoring 5 while Gabe B (18:23 - 16th) and Benton DD (18:31 - 25th). We will take this group to the Grade Level Challenge on Tuesday before we start our quick but competitive stretch run. Next week Saturday we will get our re-match with Stevens Point (who beat us at Smiley), then we will see Madison West at the City meet (who beat us at Verona & West Invites), and then the season finale Conference meet back at this same course where we will attempt to win the JV1 & JV2 championships. With three weeks remaining in the season we are going in the right direction with 23 athletes setting lifetime personal records on Saturday. These PRs included Clayton K (3:25), Kyle W (1:40), Ameya K (1:24), Pete B (1:22), Martin V (1:13), Walker V (1:07), Peter V (:36), Finn J (:27), James B (:26), Peter S (:24), Joey DR (:12), Adrian A (:10), and Zane R (:06).

This week will be very busy with Homecoming events & 2 meets going on. It is important that athletes are still taking care of themselves, getting rest, and staying caught up on school work. We have 3 weeks left in the season for the JV runners and then finish will be here quickly. Stay focused, stay healthy, and be ready to end the season on a high note.

Smiley Invite - Varsity = 1st, JV = 2nd

1st Place - Smiley D1 Varsity

The buses were loaded before the sun could come up, the team traveled over 2.5 hours to Wausau before most people had their Saturday morning breakfast, and on a sunny fall day the Madison Memorial boys took on 22 teams from all corners of Wisconsin in the 59th annual Smiley Invitational. After racing 5k on a difficult former state meet course the boys stormed Stevens Point local eating establishments and viewed/recited multiple Office episodes. During the day multiple PRs and season bests were run, the JV competed tough against one of the best JV programs in the state, and the Varsity team won its first Smiley Invite title. This is what high school cross country is all about and today the Madison Memorial Spartans excelled because of the work they have done throughout the season. As we head into the second half of the season the team is rounding into great shape and look forward to continuing great success.

The strength of our varsity this season has been our ability to run as a team. This was tested on Saturday against some tough competition but the team rose again to the occasion. The varsity scored 72 points to beat Stevens Point by 6 points. Both Madison Memorial & Stevens Point averaged a 17:03 for their scorers and had a total time of 1:25.12 but our top 5 runners were separated by 35 seconds were as the competitions spread was 1 minute 5 seconds. Our group was again led by Jonas B (7th - 16:46) and Luke V (9th - 16:51) who earned top 10 finishes with there sub 17 minute times. Casey GT (16th - 17:06) and Trevor R (18th - 17:08 PR) worked together throughout the race to stay in the top 20. Our #5, 6, 7, & 8 runners were the best of any team in the race and did a wonderful job of moving through the pack throughout the race. Austin W (17:21 - 22nd) & Jack Z (17:27 - 24th) finished strong as Zach H (17:44 - 36th) got this group out in a good position and Dom G (17:57 - 53) gave us 8 runners under 18 minutes (Stevens Point had 7 runners sub 18 where as the next best was 5 runners). The varsity team beat some very strong programs and continues to improve each meet.

From the start of the JV race our guys knew they were in for a strong battle from a very young but talented Stevens Point JV squad. Our team was missing a few key components but again the guys who were in the race stepped up to compete at a high level. We fell short to beating Stevens Point by 11 points but we will have an opportunity to compete against them again in two weeks at Stoughton. This race should be motivation for our JV guys to want to improve every day at practice to finish the last month of the season strong. The JV was led by Jared G (18:15 PR - 3rd) who ran with the lead pack throughout the entire race. Gabe B (18:25 - 5th) and Davis B (18:26 PR - 6th) closed the last mile great to get into the top 10 while Ty B (18:35 - 11th) just missed but still ran great. Frosh Peter V (18:50 PR - 18th) broke the 19 minute barrier rounding out the top 5 scorers. Ben T (18:50 - 19th) and Eli T (18:56 - 23rd) gave us 7 runners in the top 25. In addition to these great races we had PRs run by Imaad S (1:57), Zane R (1:48), Garrett K (1:45), Joey DR (1:11), Richard T (1:11), Liam H (:57), James B (:52), Peter S (:34), Stryder C (:31), Adrian A (:16), Martin V (:05), Elliot B (:03), Ameya K (:03), & Kyle W (:02). We look forward to more PRs each week as we run on some "faster" courses and hopefully get some more good cross country weather.

Things are getting busy both at practice and in school...take care of business to stay eligible, healthy, and ready to compete. If you need help in the classroom make sure to ask your teachers or classmates NOW for help to ensure you don't fall behind this quarter. Get some sleep, eat healthy, hydrate, stretch, and sleep so we are at our best each day to perform and the end of the season will be a positive and fun experience.

West Invitational - Varsity = 1st, JV = 2nd

Boys Varsity - West Invite Champions

Thursday night the Madison Memorial boys cross country team headed to Lake Farm park to compete in the Madison West Invitational. The temperatures were cooler than our first meet, the size of the field was smaller, but the JMM boys stayed on their hot start to the 2015 season. The varsity started the meet off with a solid performance winning the race with a point total of 30 points. They outdistanced Madison West by 25 points (at Verona the distance was only 5 points). In the JV race it came down to a dual meet between West and JMM with our guys narrowly missing out on the victory (4 points compared to 23 points at Verona). Both teams made nice improvement from our 1st meet to our 2nd meet and it will be important to keep improving as the season continues. The coming weeks of practice are very important to our teams success for the end of the season. It is important EVERY runner is taking care of themselves in the classroom and in running so we get the most out of EVERY day of practice. We look forward to continuing to build on this early season momentum.

The varsity team ran another great TEAM race on Thursday working off their teammates and helping each other to solid performances. All 7 finishers were in the top 30 of the race and our top 5 were all in the top 12. The group was led by Jonas B (2nd - 16:52) and Rory S (3rd - 16:53) both who challenged for the overall victory. They were closely followed by Casey GT (6th - 17:08) and Luke V (8th - 17:10). The top 5 scorers were rounded out by Trevor R (12th - 17:16) providing another solid pack running with a #1 - 5 gap of only :24 seconds. Senior Zach H (22nd - 17:49) and junior Dom G (29th - 18:04) rounded out our top 7 and were the top #6 & #7 runners respectively in the race beating many scoring runners for other teams. The 30 point total was the lowest varsity point total scored during Coach Casey's tenure and the first meet championship by a varsity squad.

Our JV team was focused going into Thursday's race and ran very motivated to follow up their varsity counterparts success. The boys came up short in winning the race but learned a lot about themselves in racing and this was a big step forward for this group as we head into the middle of our racing schedule for the season. The JV team was led by a 2, 3, 4 finish by Jack Z (17:39), Austin W (17:50), and Jared G (18:22). Seniors Sam Z (18:40 - 12th) and Calvin J (18:44-14th) rounded out the JV scoring putting our JV scorers all in the top 15. It wasn't quite enough as West also put their top 7 all in the top 15. If continue to close the gap between our #1 - 5 runners this team will continue to get stronger because it has great leadership at the front of the group. The scoring group was rounded out by junior Davis B (18:47 - 15th) and senior Gabe B (18:55 - 17th). On a soft and sloppy course due to the rain earlier in the day many of the times were not too fast but we still had 15 runners perform at a lifetime PR (personal record). These included Garrett K (3:32), Zane R (3:19), Peter S (1:27), Liam H (1:08), Davis B (:57), Finn J (:55), Joey DR (:53), James B (:32), Pete B (:12), & Elliot B (;01). If we keep working hard at practice, take care of our body, get good sleep, and stay eligible we will see a lot more time drop in the coming weeks from EVERY runner.

Verona Invitational - Var = 2nd, JV = 3rd

Boys Varsity - 2nd Place Overall

The Madison Memorial Spartans made the short trip to Verona Area High School Saturday morning to compete in the 39th annual Verona Invitational.  In the team's first action against competition from outside their own squad the boys competed against some of the best competition in our city, conference, sectional, & state. We learn a lot about our team right away and then hope we can improve from this starting point. Today our varsity had their best finish at the Verona Invitational by scoring 90 points to finish in 2nd place behind Madison LaFollette, narrowly beating both Madison West & Middleton. Our JV was missing some key components and finished in 3rd place behind Madison West & Middleton. Hopefully all the athletes can take something away from their performance this weekend and prepare for the their next race this coming Thursday.

The varsity squad started off the hot & humid morning for the Spartans in the 25 team competition. The group got out well on the first loop and fought hard on the second loop. At the finish they were led by Rory S who finished in 12th place in 17:02. He was closely followed by Luke V in 16th (17:13), Casey GT in 19th (17:16), Jonas B in 21st (17:19), and Trevor R in 22nd (17:20). The top seven were rounded out by Zach H (17:56) and Austin W (18:22). The :18 second gap between our #1 - #5 runners and the 17:14 average time for our varsity were both the best we have seen on this course and the reason leading to our best finish in meet history. We hope to continue to move this varsity group forward while maintaining the small gap for continued success.

Our JV group ran during the hottest part of the day and provided our team with a new challenge to handle this week. After now competing on a flooded course and running through the muggy heat our junior varsity runners are ready for the ever elusive perfect cross country running day. While personal records were still hard to come by at the Verona Invitational we still had many great performances on the day to lead our team to their 3rd place finish. The JV squad was led by Dom G who had a great finish narrowly winning the race placing 2nd in 18:00. He was closely followed by Jack Z in 4th (18:10). Ty B finished in 18th (18:44), Jared G placed 22nd (18:52), and Sam Z rounded out the scoring squad by placing 34th (19:12). The JV1 team was rounded out by Ben T (19:15) and Calvin J (19:17). Our JV gap of 1:12 between our #1 - #5 runners is too large and we need to close together this group (less than :30 gap) to have the success we hope for this season. This will happen by working closer together on workout and mileage days and carrying that over to race days. Some notable races from the day include Peter V who was our top frosh in 19:24, Malcolm B who was our top soph in 19:31, Davis B (19:44) and Chris X (20:54) who set lifetime PRs on this difficult course in difficult conditions because of their hard work over the last year, and for our freshman class who continues to improve each week and have a bright future still ahead of them.

To continue to improve and have success we need to make sure we are staying healthy and taking care of our body. It is important we are at practice daily and communicating with the coaches to insure we are getting the most out of every day. As classes begin we need to make sure we are in class daily, positively participating in the classroom, and turning in our homework regularly. REMINDER TO ALL...TUESDAY REPORTS START THIS WEEK (No Tues Report = No Competition). Keep up the good work at practice and continue to encourage your teammates.

Intrasquad - Warhawks Win

The rain started Friday afternoon and was relentless all night long leaving Elver park water-logged and muddy. The perfect beginning to the 2015 campaign of cross country at Madison Memorial. The rain stopped just before the race on Saturday but the flooded lagoon required a relocation of the start line and made for many puddles to splash through on race day. The boys handled the conditions valiantly and the team started the season with a successful intrasquad. This race is a starting point for a long season and hopefully each boy learns from today's events to better prepare for the remaining races. The weather is going to get hot this week as we prepare for the Verona Invite...get a water bottle and HYDRATE.

The team race was competitive but for the second year in a row the Warhawks team took the victory with a score of 475 points. The Warhawks were captained this season by Calvin J & Trevor R. The Thundercats finished in second with 514 points while The CORE took third with 566 points. Rory S won his second individual time improving upon last season by about 16 seconds. He will be joined on the varsity squad at the Verona Invite by Jonas B, Trevor R, Luke V, Casey GT, Zach H, & Austin W. We had a very small gap between our #1 - #5 runners at :37 and this along with the ability for our # 6 & 7 runners being able to beat other teams #4 or 5 runners will be a big key to our success this season. Our JV will be very strong this year and will hopefully push our varsity to bigger and better things. Saturday was a good start for our JV group and being in a JV race at invitationals will really help this group run even faster. We have a lot of kids willing to work together in both practice and meets to improve and this group running can really lead to some huge gains.

With school beginning this coming week it will be important for the athletes to start the school year with a good routine of being able to work hard at practice, get their school work completed, and still get plenty of rest each night to recover. I encourage every athlete to carry a water bottle with them at school to hydrate throughout the day (especially this week with temps be in the high 80s). It will be important for everyone to take care of their bodies over the coming weeks so we stay injury free & healthy and continue to build our fitness for the end of October. If we stay healthy, are eligible, and give our best everyday...the 2015 JMM Spartans can make big waves this season on the cross country scene.
