Sectionals - 4th Place

On Saturday afternoon the JMM boys cross country team descended upon DeForest HS in an attempt to earn a state berth to the WIAA State Meet. As a team we knew this would be difficult as only two teams qualify for state & Madison West, Middleton, & Sun Prairie had beat us just the week earlier at Conference. We had a game plan that was risky but could work to get our team to state. Our boys ran amazing at the beginning of the race positioning themselves so we had a chance to qualify to state. Unfortunately as the race wore on it was clear we would not be a top two team and state qualifier. The athletes hung tough and ran the race the hard way. We finished in 4th place even though we were ranked 5th among the teams competing at the meet today. I couldn't be prouder of how the athletes raced and hope that our young group of runners learned from this event. I want to give a big shout out to our senior captains Joe H, Ben B, and Calder B who led this group all year long both in competition and throughout every team event. These boys leave a group of dedicated & talented runners who will return with great experiences to take that next step in 2015 to help JMM return to state. Our group of Rory S, Luke V, Casey GT, Austin W, Joel F, & Jonas B join alternates Jack Z & Trevor R as a core for our team who will be hungry to return to sectionals next year a stronger and better prepared team. The dedication & work that we put into cross country over the coming months will determine whether or not we are one of the teams that can get out of this very difficult sectional next season.

This team has accomplished many great things this season and I am very proud of every runner who is a part of this team. I look forward to continuing to help all these young men mature & improve.

Big 8 Conference - Varsity = 6th, JV1 = 2nd, JV2 = 2nd

An overcast and drizzly morning at Leeson Park in Beloit was the setting for the most competitive conference championship in the state this year. The Big Eight Conference has had seven different teams ranked on the boys side of competition at one point or another during the 2014 season. Currently Madison West and Madison LaFollette occupy the top two spots in the state and they are joined in the ranking by Middleton, Sun Prairie, & JMM. Additionally, Verona & Janesville Craig have spent time in the top 20 over the season. This type of competition brings about great times and fast paced exciting races but can be difficult to judge a season's success. Little mistakes are amplified in this setting and there is on room for error. Learning how to compete in this type of environment is difficult but a great life lesson for all the boys who competed today. Our team ran well today making proud the current, past, & future Madison Memorial Spartans.

The varsity squad started off the morning with the first race of the day. The pace was led by the defending WIAA individual state champion (Olin H) and state runner-up (Ryan N) causing a fast first mile. Luke V & Jonas B reacted well to this pace while our 2nd pack needed to be out a little faster to stay in contact with the Middleton & Sun Prairie packs. Luke & Jonas positioned themselves in the top 25 early and then looked to compete for an All Conference top 15 finish. Luke led the way with a strong finish securing him 13th place and a 2nd team All-Conference. Jonas held on for a 22nd place finish and a nice PR of 16:44. The pack of Casey GT, Rory S, Joe H, Jack Z, & Ben B moved up throughout the race but couldn't quite bridge the gap to that next group. Casey finished 32nd with Rory right behind him in 34th. Joe rounded out the scoring 5 with his 41st place finish. Our 1 - 5 gap was 42 seconds and will need to be under 25 seconds for us to beat the likes of Middleton & Sun Prairie. Jack Z had a nice first race on varsity and we hope to see him in this role often next season. Ben B completed our varsity squad which had a team average of 16:57 on the day. Not too many teams in the state can have a team average time of 16:57 and have to settle for a 6th place conference finish. The varsity has one more week left of competition and one more shot at Middleton & Sun Prairie.

The second race of the day was the JV1 race that looked to be a dual between Madison West & Madison Memorial. Our team ran an amazing race there was not much else they could have done better. It was a tight race throughout (about a 3 point spread at 1 mile and a 1 point spread at 2 mile) but Madison West just had too much left in the tank during the finishing straight away as they pulled away for a 15 point victory. This was the closest we came to West this year and a big closing of the gap from the first meet of the year we they dominated us by almost 40 points. Our JV team only lost to the Madison West squad all year long and should be very proud of their season. Hopefully we can do the work this off season to regain the Big 8 JV Championship that we won last season. Our JV group was led by a PR performance from Austin W as he finished in 2nd place with a 17:01. He was joined in the top 10 by Trevor R who finished 6th. All five scorers for Memorial finished in the top 15 as Joel F (11th), Ty B (13th), & Calder B (14th) quickly followed next. The JV1 squad was rounded out by Dom G in 17:39 and Josh L in 17:49. This group along with Ben T in JV2 and our varsity combined for 15 runners under 18:00 minutes today. This is our second largest total in school history only behind last season 17 runners. Could we put 20 runners under 18:00 at the conference meet next year??

The final boys race was the JV2 race and again our biggest competition of the day was Madison West. Unfortunately in the JV2 race we were just not deep enough this year to be competitive with the likes of Madison West. The top 14 runners were all West & Memorial the only problem was that 9 of them were West and only 5 were Memorial. Only a season ago it was JMM's depth displayed in this race. The big difference between West & Memorial's JV2 runners this year was not their performance during the season but the amount of work that was done during the off season. Can our JV2 runners be willing to do the work between now and 2015? JMM JV2 finishers from last season Joe H & Casey GT put in a ton of work to get to varsity this year and Austin W, Jack Z, Trevor R, Calder B, & Dom G all moved up to JV1. The potential is in this group we can and should be able to compete and/or beat in this race next season. Today we were led by Ben T (6th) and Zach H (9th) who earned top 10 finishes. Benton DD, Caleb S, & Alex V ran great stepping up to be our top five on the day. Rounding out our scoring seven were Jared G & Gabe B. This group led the way on PRs for the day as the following athletes finished the season with lifetime PRs: Jake H (:26), Justin H (:25), Michael L (:10), Nathan L (:30), Dylan R (:41), Caleb S (:08), Alex V (:04), Trevor R (:11), Austin W (:20), Matt B (:22), Jonas B (:07), Henry C (:03), Jacob T (:11), Jack T (1:23), Alec W (:10), Chris X (:20), Adrian A (:26), Joey C (:23), Stryder C (:08), Will G (1:19), Riley H (:37), Grant J (:01), Sam M (:19), Nathan S (:30), Andy T (:43), Gerry V (2:27), & Kevin Y (:02).

Today was a great finish to another amazing season for our JV runners. Next week everyone should come out and cheer on our varsity as they try to earn one more meet for the season. Remember to finish the quarter strong and take care of your grades this school year. Continue to build upon the successes of this season and carry the lessons you have learned into your future endeavors. Best of luck to our seniors and hope to see all the underclassmen back and better than ever in the future.

City Championships - Varsity = 3rd & JV = 2nd

The last evening meet of the season brought sunny breezy conditions to Lake Farm Park for the hotly contested Madison City Championships. Competing at the meet were LaFollette (#1 in D1), West (#2 in D1), Memorial (#15 in D1), Edgewood (#10 in D2), & East. The JMM CC boys entered the meet knowing they were primed to run fast and set up themselves for the conference championships. Every member of the team provided great support for each other as we had a great night of performances all around. Here's hoping we can keep this going one more week for JV and two more weeks for varsity. Do all the right things this coming week as the end is in sight and there will be no redos.

The JV boys started the meet off with a very competitive race with Madison West. West is the only JV team we have not beat yet this year and tonight they proved to be difficult again. Many positives came out of the City meet that hopefully we can use to help us out at Conference as that is the meet we have been focusing on all season. The 22 to 46 margin was the closest we have been yet this season and our distance from each runner we would need to beat was less than 10 seconds per individual. We have 1 week to fix our mistakes and be ready to lay it all on the line at Conference in Beloit. Our JV squad was led by Jack Z (:29 PR) in 6th place & Ty B (:11) in 7th. Our next pack included Trevor R (:24) in 10th, Calder B (:18) in 11th, Austin W in 12th, Josh L (:25) in 13th, & Dom G (:15) in 14th. As we begin our taper we are seeing great times from this group as we saw 62 season best times run today, many lifetime best. Some lifetime PRs were run by Justin H (:25), Sam K (:30), Michael L (1:51), Nathan L (:14), Brian L (:31), Rami P (:01), Dylan R (:35), Caleb S (:06), Ben S (:33), Nate S (:58), Kevin T (1:10), Alex V (:33), Calvin J (:28), Richard K (1:12), Ben T (:21), Sam Z (:25), Matt (1:11), Henry C (:54), Jared G (:33), Ray G (1:12), Jansen H (:01), Thomas H (:17), Tommy K (1:15), Nic L (:15), Jacob T (:16), Jack T (1:15), Nathan W (:13), Chris X (1:09), Adrian A (:27), Emery B (1:04), Elliot B (1:57), Joey C (:21), Stryder C (:36), Kaeden H (1:16), Riley H (:58), Grant J (:15), Cayden S (1:58), Nathan S (:43), Kevin T (1:01), Eli T (:38), Andy T (:38), Kevin Y (1:42), & Abram Z (1:09).

In the varsity race there were only 33 competitors and so you either go hard with the top dogs or you run by yourself. This is a difficult way to race but our guys handle it pretty well. Luke V led our group with a nice PR running 16:19 and finishing in 12th. He was then followed by Casey GT in 16:40 (18th) and Rory S in 16:43 (19th). We then went 23rd - 26th with Jonas B in 16:53, Joel F in 16:54, Joe H in 16:56, and Ben B in 17:01. Our guys were able to place a respectable 3rd place against some very stiff competition. Our young core of runners who led us today should be excited to come back next year and do well at this meet. This group has run all season as a strong pack and will look to continue that as they head into Conference & Sectionals.

Stoughton Invitational - Varsity = 4th, JV = 1st

Snow flurries greeted the Madison Memorial boys cross country team as they loaded the buses to head out for the Stoughton Invitational Saturday morning. A combination of cold, wind, and rain guaranteed that the race would be a chilly, sloppy mess but the athletes came prepared to compete against Madison LaFollette (state #1), SPASH (#2), Middleton (#8), Baraboo (#14), Sun Prairie (#18), & Verona (#20). Our focus allowed us to close out the "regular" season on a high note as we now prepare for the "championship" season. We showed today that our hard work is paying off and we are ready to close out the 2014 season over the next 2 - 4 weeks. Be Ready! Take care of yourselves, take care of your grades, and take care of business on the course.

The day started with our jv boys looking to go out and repeat their performance from two weeks ago as they took on a strong SPASH program. The boys were focused and had lofty goals for the race. We immediately got a group of JMM jerseys at the front of the pack and positioned ourselves to have a big day. As the LaFollette individual and SPASH runners made a push towards the lead our team responded perfectly and maintained their places in the top ten. As we entered the final mile it came down to competing and we had a great group step up and perform. We were led by Calder B with an excellent 2nd place finish, he was quickly followed by Jack Z (4th) & Austin W (5th) who were quickly followed by Trevor R (7th) & Josh L (8th) putting our scoring five all in the top 8 and having a gap of only 15 seconds! This was an amazing performance by our JV group that was supported by the performances of Zach H (13th), Dom G (16th), & Ben T (18th) all earning strong top 20 finishes. We scored 26 points to outdistance SPASH who scored 61 points and had this group been in the varsity race they would have been in a close battle for 10th place. In this race we saw season bests by Gabe B & Alec W and lifetime PRs by Jack T (:48), Joey C (:30), Riley H (:08), Cayden S (:12) and Andy T (:49), and Gerry V (:18). This group of runners has City & Conference left and is primed for a great finish to the season. Stay focused on your goals and bring your best every day as we ask for a little extra focus over the last two weeks.

The varsity race was the third race of the day and the course was slightly worn by the time these guys hit the course. Our group got out a little slow again today but moved really well in the 2nd & 3rd mile to finish well. As a team we took 4th behind really strong programs of LaFollette, SPASH, & Middleton and were able to beat strong programs of Baraboo & Sun Prairie. Had our guys been out a little faster in the first mile I think we could have been very close with Middleton and we know that Baraboo didn't have their best day and Sun Prairie was missing their #1 runner. These teams will be who are competing against come Sectionals and we learned a lot about them and own team today. Luke V led our varsity group to the finish with his 18th place finish. Jonas B in 22nd & Rory S in 23rd came next earning medals for their performances on the day. Our tight pack (only a :26 gap between #1 - #5) helped us place so high today and Casey GT (27th) and Joel F (39th) rounded out our scorers. Ben B came in 42nd and Ty B had a great first varsity race this season with his 54th place. I think our slow start cost us about 10 seconds which in total put us about 20 seconds away from where we wanted to finish today. Our team is running well together as a pack and if we continue to improve together over the last few weeks we will give ourselves a shot to reach our team goals this season.

The wild Wisconsin weather that makes cross country exciting has arrived and it is important that ALL athletes have clothes at school to run in ALL weather types EVERY day. Be prepared to workout no matter what the weather is as every day will be important to accomplishing our goals for the season.
Additionally, parents & athletes make sure to look at your progress report grades and ask for help in classes you are struggling in immediately. It is important to get grades up as soon as possible not only for eligibility but also for general success in your classes. Make sure you are helping to carry on a proud Spartan tradition of JMM CC in the classroom.
