Big 8 Split Meet @ Craig - 4th Place

The Madison Memorial boys cross country team returned to Blackhawk Golf Course Tuesday evening for the Big Eight Conference Split Meet hosted by Janesville Craig. The temperature was much cooler and the number of teams was fewer (Middleton, Sun Prairie, Craig, & Beloit) but the course was the same and the boys were ready to chase fast times again. The team rested some of its top runners but the boys who did compete raced really well. Our team established 26 new lifetime PRs and had multiple other season bests. You never know what will happen when you race on the same course only days a part but things went well tonight. It also goes to show you how big a difference weather and competition can make in times during cross country.

The team was led tonight by senior captain Calder B who ran a lifetime PR of 17:40 for 16th place dipping under the 18:00 mark for the first time. Juniors Zach H & Calvin J (:18 PR) were our 2nd & 3rd runners. Sophomore Jansen H had a nice race to be our 4th runner and senior Caleb S completed our scoring five on the day. They were joined by freshman Malcolm B (:06) who PR'd for the second race in a row & junior Sam Z (:16) who broke the 19 minute barrier for the first time as our top seven runners on the day. Other PRs on the day came from Brian L (:57), Brian OJ (:35), Dylan R (1:00), Nathan Swan (:45), Elliot P (:32), Henry C (:19), Jarod G (:13), Ray G (:18), Thomas H (:41), Tommy K (:07), Nic L (:13), Jacob T (1:00), Chris X (:31), Adrian A (:04), Riley H (:06), Sam M (1:01), Nathan Swar (1:01), Kevin T (:30), Andy T (:39), & Kevin Y (1:08). Everyone will have an opportunity for small & big PRs alike if we stay healthy, stay eligible, & give 100% effort over the next closing weeks of the season.

Saturday brings some great competition & another fast course. Be prepared for whatever the weather might throw at us this week during practice and at the meet on Saturday. Get some sleep, wash your hands, & eat healthy as a strong immune system will be important with these changing weather patterns daily. Make sure you are taking care of your school work and ask your teacher or a teammate for help if you feel like your falling behind. We'll need everyone to work together to finish this season strong.

Midwest Invite - Frosh/Soph = 1st Place, Varsity = 8th Place, JV = 1st Place

Summer was not finished with the Madison Memorial boys cross country team as temperatures in the 80's and humidity greeted the team in Janesville for the Midwest Invitational. The Midwest Invitational brings together 41 boys teams from the states of Wisconsin, Iowa, & Texas to compete in one race making one of the largest invitationals hosted in Wisconsin. The competition includes Madison LaFollette (#2 in state), Arrowhead (#4), Middleton (#12), Neenah (#14), Verona (#15), our team (#16), LaCrosse Logan (#17), South Milwaukee (#18), Beaver Dam (#19), and highly established programs of MacArthur, TX and Dubuque, IA. The meet runs three events the frosh/soph race, varsity race, & jv race. Today was an opportunity to showcase our depth and talent all at one event. Our performance today was a great example of what the JMM CC Boys are capable of doing this year and in the future.

The frosh/soph race started off the morning. Many teams put their top frosh/soph in this race where as Madison Memorial has always put it's top frosh/soph who are not on varsity in this race (this year we have 5 frosh/soph on varsity). We knew missing these top runners would make things more difficult but our 5 sophs Ty B, Jack Z, Dom G, Jansen H & Jarod G and 2 frosh Malcolm B & Eli T were up to the challenge. The boys got out to a great start with Jack & Ty positioning themselves in the top 10 and the rest of the group not too far behind. It quickly became clear we had a chance to win this race as we moved our pack up throughout the race and needed to hold on versus a hard charging Monroe & Madison West program. Ty B & Jack Z led the way with their 7th & 8th place finishes. Dom G passed a couple guys in the last 400 to finish in 14th and earn an individual medal for a top 20 finish. Then came Jansen & Malcolm holding on for every spot to the finish securing top 40 finishes in 33rd & 39th respectively. Jared G & Eli T rounded out this great performance. Results were not made available for this race and all we knew was it was close. When we went to the awards ceremony there was only one team left to be announced and that was the Madison Memorial boys with 101 points beating Monroe by 5 points & West by 8 points....every position really does count. This was the first time we won this race and an improvement upon our second place trophy finish from last year. We have a great tradition starting here that hopefully can be carried on by our frosh and 8th graders next season.

The varsity was our second race of the day and the heat had already settled in by race time. In this race our team committed the ultimate no no in racing in a large meet. We didn't get out hard enough and were buried in a large field of 240+ athletes. After our poor positioning early the team spent the entire race trying to pass people to get into the race (from the mile to the finish Luke V passed 57 people). We learned it takes a lot of energy to pass people and on an already hot day against really good competition we did not perform at our best. That being said the team moved through the packs together well and having a 26 second gap allowed our team to score a decent finish. Our 8th place finish was a tie for our 2nd best finish at this meet and in the process we beat state ranked teams LaCrosse Logan, Verona, & Beaver Dam. Hopefully this group will learn from this experience and make the needed corrections as we move forward. Some other highlights from this race for our varsity our #7 runner was the 2nd best #7 runner in the race and our 26 second gap from  #1 - #5 was the best in the varsity race. I'm confident this group will do bigger and better things not only this season but in future seasons too.

The last race of the day was the jv team and prior to their race we discussed the different race strategies we saw in our frosh/soph race & varsity race. The jv boys listened, understood, and acted with getting out to great positions early in the race. Our team quickly placed four runners in the top ten and seized the opportunity to win this race for the first time in our team history. Trevor R led the charge leading the race for a good portion before taking 2nd place with a great performance. Josh L quickly followed in 4th, Zach H came in 6th, & Calder B in 9th for FOUR athletes with single digit cards. This is how you win a race and they were joined by Calvin J in 19th all earning medals with their top 20 finishes. Additionally, Benton DD & Ben T finished ahead of every teams #5 runners bumping up the margin of victory even more. Our previous best finish in this jv meet was a fourth place finish, today our boys handily won this race scoring 39 points outdistancing a very strong Arrowhead jv team by 24 points. This group keeps improving every week and is ready for a great finish to the end of the year. We had PRs in this race from Brian L (:27), Brian OJ (:45), Alex V (:08), Calvin J (:10), Tommy K (:48), Emery B (:10), Malcolm B (:01), Kaeden H (:25), Cayden S (:16), and Kevin Y (:51). Keep up the work at practice and we will see some more PRs in the coming weeks.

Get ahead on your homework, get to class on time & take care of attendance, stretch, ice, rest, rest rest, and take care of yourselves. We are in the final stretch of the season and it is time to reap the benefits of all our hard work make sure you are eligible and healthy to do so.

Smiley Invite - Varsity = 4th, JV = 1st

A fun and interesting bus ride to Wausau to see the beautiful fall foliage and compete on a difficult former state meet course at American Legion Golf Course. What better way to spend a Saturday in Wisconsin? The Madison Memorial Spartans competed against some of the states best in the Smiley Invitational and came away with some great results. The boys earned a 4th place finish in the overall division 1 results (3rd in the large school) while seeing the # 4 & 5 rank teams in Kimberly & SPASH and comparing to a partial team of Sun Prairie (#7). We learned a lot about our team today and are moving in the right direction at this time of the season. Our JV took down two deep and strong programs in Eagan, MN and SPASH. This was the first time our JV won the team championship (after missing by 3 points last season) and is something we should contend for at every meet still remaining this season. I hope the young athletes competing in the race today saw hard these guys up front worked to earn this title. As it would be a great tradition to keep the team title going (adding it to our string of JV individual champions). There are 4 weeks left for all kids and 5-6 weeks left for the varsity. The end of the season is drawing near and we are rounding in to good shape at the right time. Stay healthy, take care of your legs, stay ahead on your school work, GET SLEEP, wash your hands, eat healthy, Make Good Choices, and proudly represent JMM CC in all aspects of your life.

The cross country course at the American Legion GC is a true cross country course and is the only course we will see this year that best represents the state meet course in Wisconsin Rapids. We knew our times at Smiley would be slower than the course at Lake Farm Park and add in the humidity Saturday and this was true. More important in cross country than the times is how you compete against your competition and this is what our team did on Saturday. Our varsity was led by Rory S & Luke V who finished in the top 20 for medals with their 13th & 15th place finishes respectively. We then had a great pack working together in Joe H, Ben B, & Joel F to round out our scoring runners. We look for this group to close in on Rory & Luke as our gap of :43 seconds is going to need to be closer to :30 to accomplish our goals in the Conference & Sectionals at the end of the year. We had 5 runners in before every team except SPASH  but our lack of a true stud at #1 means we need to have a tighter scoring pack (we lost to Kimberly by 18 points...after 2 runners we trailed them by 22 points...our depth is great, we need to use it to our advantage). Trevor R & Austin W ran great as they beat top 5 runners from 19 of the 23 teams competing today. Senior Josh L enjoyed the learning experience of being in his first every varsity race. The team ran well today and can build on this success.

The Smiley Invite is one of the few meets we go to that awards a team trophy in the Junior Varsity race and last season our boys missed that trophy by 3 points. This year the team was focused on being able complete the task of winning the meet as a team. We got off to a slow start as our tight box spot led to many athletes not getting out to a position they hoped to be in right away but our patience and strength paid off as the green JMM uniforms worked their way into the top 10 around the mile mark. After losing his varsity spot on Tuesday sophomore Jonas B had something to prove in earning back his spot and he did not let this opportunity slip away. After taking the lead mid way through he went on to be our third straight Smiley JV champion. Casey GT ran a great race after being sick all week to take a 2nd place and Jack Z & Ty B earned top 10 finishes with their 5th & 9th place finishes. Calder B held on to a great finish to secure the team championship with his 15th place finish. They were supported by Zach H, Dom G, & Ben T in taking down a very strong SPASH jv program. We will see this team again at Stoughton and will need another full team performance to repeat today's victory. As we continue to return people from injury this jv team is rounded into nice form. Will we be able to do enough to close the gap on West?

Grade Level Challenge - 5th Place

The sun was shining Tuesday evening as the Madison Memorial Spartans got their first full look at the Big Eight Conference during the Big Eight Grade Level Challenge at Lake Farm Park. The Big Eight is stacked this season!!! That may even be an understatement, as currently six boys teams are ranked in the top 20 in the state (Lafollette - 1st, West - 2nd, Sun Prairie - 7th, Middleton - 13th, Verona - 16th, & Madison Memorial - 20th). The JMM boys team was not at its best Tuesday night but still managed to pull out a 5th place finish, we just missed 3rd place by 7 points and was well within our capabilities. Going forward it is important that EVERY member of this team embraces our goals we hope to accomplish this season. We talked as a team this week about how we have too many people holding back the betterment of the team through lack of focus, commitment, and follow through. It will be imperative that over the next month (that is all that is left in the season) EVERY athlete is giving their best effort so they are not impeding the progress of their teammates. JMM Boys CC has a proud tradition that needs to be carried on and this will only happen with strong leadership and committed followers. I know we can make the necessary adjustments and finish this season on a high note.

The meet started with the boys Frosh/Soph race. The team was led by Luke V who placed 6th amongst sophomores with a 17:06. Other sophomores counting towards the team score were Jonas B in 11th and Jack Z in 13th. In the sophomore race we had PRs by Matt B, Thomas H, Tommy K, Nic L, & Jack T. As for the freshman they were led by Joel F who earned a medal with his time of 17:20 and his 3rd place finish amongst freshman. We had PRs by the following freshman: Adrian A, Kaedan H, Riley H, Nathan S, Kevin T, Andy T, Gerry V, Kevin Y, & Abrama Z. This young group of runners continues to improve and shows great promise as we move forward as a program this season and into the future.

In the Junior/Senior race the boys were led by Rory S's 16:42 for 4th amongst juniors. Rory's finish earned him a medal at the awards ceremony and a new PR. Additionally Austin W's 6th place finish and Trevor R's 12th place finish counted toward our team scoring. In the senior race JMM was led by Joe H & Ben B who went 14th & 15th respectively. PRs were set in this race by Jack G, Justin H, Josh L, Brian OJ, Rami P, Ben S, Nathan S, & Richard K. This group needs to continue to teach and lead for the large group of young athletes that we have on this years team. These athletes will help us determine what our team looks like at the end of the season.

West Invite - Varsity = 3rd & JV = 2nd

Summer running seemed like a distant memory Thursday night as the Madison Memorial Boys Cross Country took on the brisk cold evening greeted the team at their first race at Lake Farm Park. The boys quickly realized the flat, well groomed trails of Lake Farm could lead to fast times and many athletes took advantage of this on a great night of competition. As always it was fun to see the guys running fast times but more important is that we continue to improve as a team from our top runner to the bottom. We will continue to work hard at practice as this is the time of year that will help make our end of season a success. Everyone needs to make sure they are staying healthy, keeping up with school work, and taking care of their body in this busy part of the season.

The varsity started the meet off with a strong 3rd place performance. They were led by sophomores Luke V (12th - 16:45), Jonas B (15th - 16:51), and Casey G-T (23rd - 17:04). Joining them at the awards ceremony was freshman Joel F (25th - 17:13). Seniors Joe H (28th - 17:21) and Ben B (31st - 17:31) ran strong races and Junior Trevor R (35th - 17:45) stepped in to run a great first varsity race. Having two athletes under 17:00 was a nice step forward this week and our gap from #1 - #5 today was :36 seconds which is great. It would have been nice to beat Verona for 2nd place but we will have a chance to see them later in the year again. The Big 8 Conference might just be the toughest conference in the state this year and this will help our team bring out our best this season as we strive to improve against these teams.

In the junior varsity race we had 42 new PRs enroute to our 2nd place finish. We have a lot of work yet to do to catch West's JV. We took a step closer today but we will need to crack that top 3 runners to have a chance to win against them and put more guys up in the top 5 of the race. Our JV group had 4 runners under 18:00 and a solid group up front. When we compare our scoring 5 (:40 spread) to West's top 5 (:20 spread) it is evident that we need to continue to pack up that front group at the top. We are capable of doing this and will continue to strive for making improvements. Our top 7 all earned medals today with their top 20 finishes as Austin W (17:21), Ty B (17:31), Jack Z (17:35), Dom G (17:47), Calder B (18:01), Ben T (18:03), and Josh L (18:06). Another big milestone today was having 2 freshman Malcom B & Alex W breaking the 19 minute barrier,

Verona Invite - Varsity = 5th JV = 2nd

The September sun greeted the Madison Memorial boys cross country team on a cool Saturday morning providing for a wonderful start to the 2014 campaign. The competition was stiff in both the varsity & jv races and we learned a lot about our team at the first meet of the year. Our targets are now set on our goals for the remainder of the season and we have some work yet to do to reach our fullest potential but today was a great meet for JMM. Our depth and competitiveness will help us throughout the season and I challenge each team member to improve each day for our team. I'm excited about what this season holds.

The varsity team started the day off at the Verona Invitational with a great performance. At first glance a 5th place finish seems a bit disappointing but a closer examination shows our team performed quite well. We lost to LaFollette (5th at State last year), West (2nd at State last year), Middleton (15th at State last year), and Baraboo (lost to Middleton on the tie breaker to go to state last year). We are within striking distance of Middleton and Baraboo and will strive each week to close the gap and get in front of these teams. Our team performance was good as Rory S led the squad with a 16:58 16th place finish (the 2nd best time run by a JMM runner at Verona) and was followed closely by Luke V in 17:06 for 21st (5th best JMM time at Verona). Our gap to our #3 runner needs to shrink but we had a great pack of Joe H, Jonas B, & Casey GT all together to round out our scoring five. Normally a #1 - #5 gap of :44 seconds would be very solid but it looks like we will need closer to a :30 seconds gap to beat the likes of Middleton, Sun Prairie, & Baraboo this season. Our scoring varsity was rounded out by Ben B and Austin W. Combined the varsity average time of 17:27 was the fastest we have run on this course and our 5th man today was the fastest we have had 5 runners at the Verona meet. These are all positives that we can build on going forward this season.

In the JV race we were led by our top Frosh Joel F with a 3rd place finish in 17:38 (best frosh JMM time at Verona). He was joined in the awards ceremony with top 30 finishes by Trevor R in 12th, Ty B in 14th, Dom G in 16th, Calvin J in 21st, Calder B in 22nd, and Ben T in 25th. These guys ran great today having our JV1 all be under 18:48. We have some work ahead of us to chase down West's JV but we have done it in past seasons and can do it again this year. We'll see them again next week Thursday and can hopefully close the gap in even this short time. On the day our team set 33 new lifetime PRs which shows great progress. As we continue to progress through the season we will see even more PRs. Keep up the good work at practice, take care of business in the classroom, and keep yourself healthy at home. Believe in each other and what we are doing as a team and this will be another fun season.
