Saturday morning at Elver Park was humid and damp but the rain held off long enough for the Madison Memorial boys cross country team to complete their first 5k of the season during the team's intrasquad competition. Sixty JMM athletes took to the course along with 8 alumni/parents to enjoy a wonderful morning of running. Our team competed at a very high level although not all our times were what we hoped for on Saturday. The wet conditions & humidity made a difficult course even tougher but it provided us a good challenge and a starting point that we can improve upon as the season continues. I challenge all the athletes to learn from today's race and improve during the week as we prepare for our first meet against other teams next Saturday at Verona. I'm excited to see where we compare against the local & state competition.
The Warhawks team captained by Calder B won the team title with an impressive score of 563. The Thundercats finished second with 618 while The CORE took third with 680 points. In the individual championship Rory S looked very solid running a 17:12 for the victory and posting the 4th best winning time on the Elver course. The gap from our #1 runner to our #2 runner was larger then it should be but our pack was very deep and strong today. Hopefully this group of runners can close the gap between Rory and themselves to closer to 30 seconds. Today's #1 - 5 gap was :57 seconds but can be and will be better. Joining Rory on varsity for our first invitational will be Luke V, Joe H, Jonas B, Ben B, Casey GT, & Austin W. This varsity group will be pushed by a very strong group of JV runners who want their shot at varsity and have some ambitious goals to chase this season as a JV program. At today's meet the JV group was led by our top frosh finisher Joel F who just missed a varsity spot. As a team we need to continue to improve to get the most out of this season but I felt today was a great step in the right direction.
As school begins next week it is important that all athletes learn to balance their time between academics and athletics. Additionally it will be vital to take care of our bodies by creating a healthy sleep pattern, eating healthy meals all day long, hydrating before & after practices, and stretching & icing sore bodies. The coming weeks of practice are critical to the amount of improvement we can make this season. If we are able to stay healthy, remain eligible, and help push either other to achieve our best...2014 JMM CC will be a GREAT year!
