Great racing by Jake at the 2021 State Meet. We set a game plan...and somehow, we even executed the game plan :) This led to a great race for Jake and a fine finish to our 2021 season. The D1 WIAA state meet brings together 190 of the best runners from around the state. 140 which qualify with their teams and 50 individuals like Jake who run independently. Our plan for Jake was to get to the front of the "bubble" which places him behind the leaders and chase group but the front of the peloton "bubble" group. We asked for a 5:10 mile to accomplish that and Jake went through in 5:10.7 in 47th place setting him up for a great race. With familiar faces around him he worked hard to pass people...which at the state meet means you are holding your spot. Jake's second mile put him into 43rd place and set for a top 50 finish. He battled the hills and stayed focus bringing home a 44th place finish in 16:57. 44th out of 190 runners is great! He was the 19th best individual qualifier (3rd best from our sectional...our sectional had the 5 best individual finishers). Running at the Ridges GC in Wisconsin Rapids is a special experience. It was great to see so many athletes & fans at the meet cheering on Jake! Many guys even tried to keep up with Coach Casey for cheering...now they understand :0
2021 had many up & down experiences it was fun to finish our season at the State Meet. It is always more fun to have a team competing but getting Jake to the meet was still special. We graduate multiple seniors...including Jake but we have a lot of young athletes coming back too. I hope that 2022 can bring a return to the state meet and maybe next it will be more than one individual. The off-season awaits and track season this spring. Keep running...enjoy the process and enjoy the journey.
